STEM

Every year, students with a passion for STEM descend upon the Yard and have a chance to partake in a summer camp unlike any other. We are thrilled to share a recap of the highly successful 2024 Summer STEM Camp, which features the incredible experiences and learning opportunities provided to rising ninth, tenth, and eleventh grade high school students.

How It Went: The 2024 Summer STEM Program

In June, the USNA STEM Center and the Office of Admissions welcomed 985 high school students to the 2024 Summer STEM Program. These students, selected through a rigorous application process, were invited to spend a week at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. This vibrant program was designed for students with a keen interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). Throughout the week, students engaged in problem-solving, exploratory learning, critical thinking, and team-building activities.

Academic and Practical Learning

The majority of each day was spent in an academic setting, where students worked alongside Naval Academy faculty and midshipmen in state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories. The curriculum covered a wide range of exciting and relevant STEM topics, including:

Characteristics of Rocket Flight: Students learned about the principles of rocket flight, including propulsion, aerodynamics, and trajectory analysis.

Machine Learning: Participants explored the basics of machine learning algorithms and their applications in various fields.

Biotechnology: This topic introduced students to the intersection of biology and technology, highlighting innovations in medical and agricultural fields.

Aquaculture Engineering: Students examined engineering solutions for sustainable fish farming and water management.

DIY Wireless Data Transfer: Participants engaged in hands-on projects to understand the principles and technology behind wireless communication.

Rotary Wing Dynamics: This subject covered the mechanics and physics of helicopter flight.

Cryptography and Cybersecurity: Students delved into the world of cryptography, learning about encryption methods and cybersecurity principles.

Reverse Engineering: Participants learned how to deconstruct and analyze the design and function of various technologies.

Extracurricular Activities and Team Building

In addition to the academic sessions, students participated in field trips and team-building activities on the Yard. These experiences were designed to foster teamwork, camaraderie, and a deeper connection to the Naval Academy's culture and values. The combination of hands-on learning and interactive activities provided a well-rounded experience that inspired and motivated the participants.

Support and Sponsorship

STEM 2The USNA STEM student programs are made possible through the generous sponsorship of the Office of Naval Research, DoD STEM, and the Naval Academy Foundation. These sponsors play a crucial role in ensuring that the STEM programs continue to provide high-quality educational experiences to students from diverse backgrounds.

Looking Ahead: 2025 Summer STEM Program

We are excited to announce that applications for the 2025 Summer STEM program will open in January 2025. We encourage all interested students to apply and join us for another transformative week of STEM exploration and learning at the U.S. Naval Academy.

Explore the Yard

We invite you to book a tour and explore the Yard. Every visit is an opportunity to support the midshipmen and make a difference. Come and be a part of the history and tradition of the U.S. Naval Academy. Every visit to the USNA, purchase from the USNA Gift Shop, Midshipmen Store, and Navyonline.com, as well as every dining experience, contributes to supporting the Brigade. Profits from these activities fund extracurricular programs such as cultural arts, music, theater, club sports, and more, fostering teamwork and camaraderie among midshipmen. Your support directly benefits these young leaders, helping them develop into well-rounded individuals.

Thank you once again for your continued support of the USNA and our STEM Outreach efforts. Together, we are shaping the future of STEM and inspiring the next generation of innovators and leaders.
