Summer STEM: Open to rising ninth, tenth, and eleventh-graders, this program is ideal for students who love problem-solving, engineering, and innovation.
Summer Seminar: Offered the summer before senior year, this highly sought-after program immerses students in a week of leadership training, academics, and athletics, giving them a realistic picture of the challenges and rewards of Academy life.

2. Take a USNA Admissions Tour

If you’ve ever asked, “What’s the best way to learn about the details of USNA admissions?” The answer is simple: visit the Yard.

The USNA Admissions Briefing and Walking Tours, offered twice daily from the Armel-Leftwich Visitor Center, provide a behind-the-scenes look at the life of midshipmen. Students will:

Attend a briefing led by an Active Duty member (10:00 AM or 2:00 PM, daily, except Sundays and federal holidays) and get their questions answered.
Walk the Yard on a guided tour at 11:00 a.m. or 3:00 p.m., taking in the rich history, architecture, and traditions of the Academy. It’s also a good time to possibly meet fellow high school students who may be applying to the Academy.

3. Prepare Academically

Math: Four years, including geometry, algebra, and trigonometry. Precalculus and calculus are highly encouraged.
Science: One year each of chemistry and physics (with labs if possible).
English: Four years with special attention to the study and practice of effective writing. Surveys of English and American literature are especially helpful.
Foreign Language: At least two years.
History: One full year of U.S. history and, where possible, a full year of European or world history.
Computer and Typing Courses: Useful for coursework, as all midshipmen rely on personal computers.

Take Honors, Advanced Placement (AP), and International Baccalaureate (IB) courses if they are offered. USNA Admissions also recommends taking the PSAT. The SAT is not optional.

4. Prepare Physically

Life at the Naval Academy is demanding (both mentally and physically) and it’s never too soon for your teen to implement their physical training. They’ll be required to submit a Candidate Fitness Assessment as part of their Naval Academy Application, and they’ll hit the ground running on the first day of Plebe Summer. USNA Admissions recommends candidates connect with the offices of their Representative and both of their U.S. Senators in the spring of junior year to request a nomination. Check their websites for specific information.
