Bancroft Hall: More Than a Dorm
It’s a leisurely stroll over to “T Court” to check out Bancroft Hall. This Beaux Arts masterpiece isn’t just a dorm—it’s the largest single dormitory in the country, housing over 4,000 midshipmen. That’s right, an entire student body under one roof!
This building also contains a post office, a uniform store, a dining hall, the Midshipmen Store, Memorial Hall, a barber and beauty shop, and a few hidden courtyards that offer peaceful moments between drills and duty. You’ll feel the sense of pride and discipline that defines life at the Academy.
Soak in the Summer Vibes: The Quadrangle
At the center of it all lies the Quadrangle, a beautifully landscaped green space flanked by some of the most historic Naval Academy buildings. It’s a peaceful spot for a picnic, a selfie, or just watching the comings and goings of midshipmen as they move from workout to drill.
Monumental Moments: The USNA Chapel and Crypt
A short walk takes you to the U.S. Naval Academy Chapel. It’s not just a gorgeous piece of architecture—it’s a spiritual anchor for the Brigade and one of the most iconic buildings on campus. With its massive copper dome and soaring interior, it’s an inspiring and soothing stop.
It also has a treasure below; beneath the Chapel lies the crypt of John Paul Jones, considered one of America’s earliest naval heroes. His tomb and the columns that surround it are carved from gorgeous black French marble to resemble the deep sea.
Soundtrack of the Yard: The Zimmerman Bandstand
Directly across from the Chapel and tucked into the heart of the Yard is the Zimmerman Bandstand. This beautiful piece of Yard history was built in 1922, and named for the Academy’s longtime Bandmaster and Music Director, Charles A. Zimmerman. It’s one of the most famous spots on the Yard, having hosted everything from impromptu brass performances to ceremonial concerts.
In fact, if you catch our special Anchors Aweigh Music Tour, you can experience a free concert weekly starting Thursday, July 10th and running through August 7th (each concert starts at 12:30 p.m.).
Walk Through History: The USNA Museum
Not far from the bandstand, housed in Preble Hall, is the USNA Museum—a treasure trove of naval lore (and best of all, admission is free)!
Don’t miss the famous Rogers Ship Model Collection, one of the finest in the world, with intricately detailed models dating back to the 17th century. You’ll also find historical uniforms, swords, and relics from battles at sea.
Recharge and Refuel: Dining on the Yard
All that walking works up an appetite, and there’s no shortage of options. For a unique dining experience, head to The Alley at the Naval Academy Club. With its inviting maritime vibe and excellent menu, it’s one of the best dining spots in Annapolis—especially if you want to relax somewhere a little less touristy and more “Naval Academy.”
Midshipmen, faculty, and guests alike enjoy everything from fresh seafood to hearty sandwiches, and lunch is open to the public. Make sure to ask for the day’s special, and don’t skip dessert! Then you can take a relaxing walk back to the USNA Gift Shop to snag the perfect Navy souvenir.
Shop for the Midshipmen: USNA Gift Shop
Located next to the Armel-Leftwich Visitor Center, the USNA Gift Shop is the official stop for Navy apparel, gear, accessories, home décor, and more. Looking for a Fourth of July outfit or a fun new hat? You’ll find it here. Bonus: Your purchase directly supports the Brigade of Midshipmen.
