Spring is a time of renewal, warmth, and vibrant energy - and at the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA), it’s also a time for incredible music. From March to June, the Yard comes alive with musical performances that showcase the talent and discipline of the midshipmen. Whether you’re a fan of choral harmonies, symphonic melodies, or spirited marching band tunes, the Naval Academy offers something to delight every music lover.

Not only will you enjoy world-class performances, but your visit also supports the midshipmen, who dedicate their lives to serving our country. Each USNA tour, dining experience on the Yard, or purchase from USNA shops funds extracurricular activities like the arts, music, theater, club sports, and more that fuel teamwork and camaraderie amongst the Brigade. Let’s explore the musical lineup this spring, with everything you need to plan your visit, attend performances, and make the most of your time on the Yard.

1. USNA Glee Club: Inspiring Choral Excellence

The USNA Men’s and Women’s Glee Clubs are renowned for their vocal artistry, performing everything from patriotic Navy songs to contemporary pieces. Their spring concerts are a must-see, blending tradition with innovation in every note.

Highlights:

  • Performances often include collaborations with symphonies and many special guest artists, including world-renowned soprano Renée Fleming.
  • Signature songs include “Eternal Father, Strong to Save,” “Blue and Gold,” “Anchors Aweigh,” and other moving classics.

After their Florida Spring Tour, the Spring Tour Home Concert is on March 28th at the Naval Academy. Both glee clubs also perform with the Gospel Choir during Commissioning Week on May 20th. See both the USNA Glee Club men’s and women’s schedules here.

The USNA Orchestra was founded by Monte Maxwell, Director of Chapel Music, Chapel Organist, and Orchestra Conductor, around 2003. Composed of about 55-60 talented midshipmen, they play concerts and recitals throughout the year.

Highlights:

  • Performances feature everything from full symphonies to intimate chamber music.
  • Depending upon the musical backgrounds of the midshipmen, the orchestra features typical symphonic instruments and may even include a harpist.

They are masters of the Navy anthem. They also serve as a military band for outside events. This Navy band typically performs over 100 times per year in support of the Brigade of Midshipmen.

Their spring concert is on April 25th, and they’ll play during Commissioning Week for the turnover formation and demonstration on May 21st.

Highlights:

  • Regular appearances at Brigade of Midshipmen formations and ceremonial events.

They’ll perform in nearby Washington, DC on March 23rd as the guest choir at Union Temple Baptist Church - and also perform on the Yard during Commissioning Week, on May 20th, at the USNA Chapel with the Men’s and Women’s Glee Clubs.
