Anniversaries are a time to reflect on and celebrate the significance of a particular event. Marking the passage of time, and appreciating how the event has shaped us, helps us to understand who we are and where we have come from. Within the United States Navy family, October is well known for being the month to celebrate the Navy’s birthday, which was established on October 13, 1775. October is also the month in which the United States Naval Academy was established. This year marks the Academy’s 174th anniversary.

As the seasons slowly change from summer to fall, trees transform into kaleidoscopes of magnificent color, and the crisp, cool air seems to summon treasured autumn traditions. Football games, bonfires, apple picking, and pumpkin-spiced lattes all have their enthusiasts, but Halloween is one tradition with devoted fans of all ages.

Visitors to the Naval Academy may have noticed an intricate design cut into the stone above the entrance to Bancroft Hall. The same design can also be found cast in bronze and embedded into the sidewalk near the figurehead of Tecumseh. This is the seal and coat-of-arms representing the United States Naval Academy.
