Summary:

The U.S. Naval Academy Sponsor Program pairs Annapolis-area families with midshipmen to provide encouragement, stability, and a local support system during their demanding Academy years. The program strengthens community ties, enhances the midshipman experience, and plays a vital role in officer development, making it a deeply rewarding way for civilians to give back.

Have you ever thought about opening your home - and your heart - to a U.S. Naval Academy midshipman? If you live in the Annapolis area, enjoy meeting impressive young leaders, and want to give back in a meaningful way, the USNA Sponsor Program may be exactly what you’re looking for. Rooted in tradition and community pride, this program connects local families with midshipmen and offers support during one of the most demanding chapters of their lives.

At its core, the sponsor program meaning is simple: To provide encouragement, stability, and a sense of home. But in practice, sponsorship becomes something much bigger: A powerful partnership that strengthens both the midshipman and the Annapolis community.

A Tradition of Mutual Support

The USNA Sponsor Program creates a bridge between the Academy and the city that surrounds it. Sponsors gain a firsthand look at life on the Yard, learning about Naval Academy traditions, military structure, and the intense daily schedule of a Navy midshipman. In return, midshipmen receive something invaluable: Time away from Bancroft Hall, a comfortable place to relax, and the support of caring adults who are rooting for their success.

For many midshipmen - especially those who come from far away or even overseas - having a local “home base” can make all the difference. Sponsors offer perspective, mentorship, and a listening ear. Over time, these relationships often grow into lifelong friendships, continuing well beyond graduation and commissioning. Many sponsor families and their midshipmen stay in touch their entire lives - it’s a powerful connection. It’s one of the Navy’s quiet but meaningful traditions, built on mutual trust and shared purpose.

How to Become a Sponsor

Becoming a midshipman sponsor is a process designed to ensure the best experience for both sponsors and midshipmen. Applications open annually, and this year the application window runs from January 1 to July 15, 2026, for the Class of 2030 entering the Academy in June 2026.

The process includes three main steps:

Submit an Application
Prospective sponsors complete an application outlining their interest and ability to support a midshipman. Application instructions and forms are available through the USNA Sponsor Program.

Attend Mandatory Training
Accepted sponsors attend a required training session every five years. These sessions, typically about two hours long, prepare sponsors to understand Academy policies, expectations, and best practices for supporting midshipmen. Training dates for the Class of 2030 plebes will be posted here in mid-March; no pre-registration is required.

Meet Your Midshipman
After acceptance and training, sponsors are introduced to their assigned midshipman at a Naval Academy-hosted event, usually held in Alumni Hall in early August. Further details will be sent via email. From there, the relationship begins.

What a Sponsor Does

Many people ask what a sponsor does. The answer is flexible and realistic. Sponsors are not expected to host every weekend or holiday. Instead, they provide consistency and care, offering meals, a quiet place to study, help with laundry, oftentimes a ride to an area airport during special leave periods, or simply conversation and encouragement.

Sponsors might attend athletic events, celebrate birthdays, or offer advice during stressful times. Sometimes, the most meaningful moments are the simplest: Sharing a home-cooked meal or letting a midshipman relax on a couch with family pets nearby. Sponsors become an integral part of their midshipman’s journey and often say they receive just as much joy from the experience as they give.

The Lasting Impact

Sponsorship creates a ripple effect. By supporting a midshipman today, you’re contributing to the development of tomorrow’s U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps officers. These young men and women carry the lessons of mentorship, hospitality, and community with them into their careers and beyond.

Many sponsors remain connected with their midshipmen long after graduation, celebrating promotions, weddings, and milestones. These enduring bonds reflect the strength of the USNA community and the pride shared by those who support it.

Join the Annapolis Family

The Naval Academy is deeply grateful to the sponsors who help extend the Academy experience beyond the Yard. Their generosity gives midshipmen a sense of belonging and balance, helping them thrive academically, personally, and professionally. By extending the Academy experience beyond the Yard, sponsors help midshipmen form roots in Annapolis and establish connections that strengthen the entire Naval Academy family.
