You might be a U.S. Naval Academy midshipman  sponsor if…you live in the Annapolis area, would like to host one more midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy and are interested in learning more about life at the Academy and becoming part of the USNA family. The Academy greatly values its USNA Sponsor Program and is grateful to all of the sponsors who spend their time, resources and energy providing a wonderful “home away from home” experience for our midshipmen.

A Win for All

The USNA Sponsor Program is a wonderful win for both parties: it gives Annapolis area community members an opportunity to meet midshipmen and learn more about the Naval Academy. It also gives midshipmen an opportunity to develop and benefit from informal exchanges with civilian and military members in Annapolis and its adjacent communities.  The program is designed for all midshipmen, no matter which year they’re in, and often creates friendships, mentorships and memories that continue far beyond the midshipmen’s years at the Academy. Many midshipmen are coming from across the nation and around the world, and acclimating to the USNA environment is much easier when they have a “home base” and nearby family figures as well.

Want to Sponsor a Midshipman?

The first step is to fill out an online sponsor application and submit it to the sponsor office. The application period runs every year from December 1st through July 15th. You will complete a paper form and email it back to sponsor@usna.edu, or mail it to the sponsor office. If the application does not accept your zip code, please call the sponsor office at (410) 293-7031 for instructions. In late July, the office will notify sponsors if they’ve been accepted into the program. All accepted sponsors must attend training every three years prior to being assigned new midshipmen. For the upcoming Class of 2027 plebes, training sessions will be in Mahan Hall. They last approximately two hours; there is no need to pre-register. The final two training dates are:

  • Tuesday - July 11 at 7:00 PM
  • Thursday - August 3 at 7:00 PM

You’ll be able to meet your assigned midshipman or midshipmen at a Naval Academy hosted gathering in Alumni Hall on August 6, 2023. Further details will be provided by email to accepted sponsors.
